Objective
TO IMPROVE THE LIFE AND WEAR RESISTANCE OF COMPLEX-SHAPE HSS MACHINE TOOLS BY OPTIMIZING THE TECHNOLOGY OF COATING THEM.
THIS PROJECT AIMS THE POSSIBILITY OF INCREASING THE PRODUCTIVITY OF MACHINE TOOLS BY COATING HSS (HIGH SPEED STEEL) TOOLS OF COMPLEX SHAPE WIHT TITANIUM NITRIDE OR CARBIDE OR ALUMINA. THE ECONOMY DERIVED FROM AN INCREASE IN THE TOOL LIFE AND MACHINE TOOL PRODUCTIVITY IS SUFFICIENTLY HIGH TO JUSTIFY THE CONSUMPTION OF EXPENSIVE MATERIALS SUCH AS TITANIUM. HOWEVER, THE ECONOMIC OF USING COATED TOOLS ARE STRICTLY RELATED TO THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS CHOSEN AND TO THE QUALITY CONTROL OF THE END PRODUCT.
TO ACHIEVE THESE AIMS THE PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE FOLLOWING STAGES:
- SURVEY ON THE ACTUAL OF KNOWLEDGE IN COATED HSS TOOLS;
- SETTING UP A CONTROL METHODOLOGY FOR COATED TOOLS;
- STUDY OF THE COATINGS INDUSTRIALLY AVAILABLE ON THE WORLD MARKET;
- INDUSTRIAL AND IN-FIELD COMPARISONS BETWEEN COATED TOOLS AND NORMALLY UNCOATED TOOLS;
- CHOICE, INSTALLATION AND INSPECTION OF A PILOT COATING PLANT;
- INVESTIGATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE PROCESS PARAMETERS ON THE QUALITY OF THE END PRODUCT.
THE POLYTECHNIC OF TURIN (ITALY) AND THE CENTRO SPERIMENTAL METALLURGICO (CSM - ROME, ITALY) WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH METEC AT VARIOUS STAGES OF THIS PROJECT.
