Objective
TO DEVELOP A SUITABLE SUBSTITUTE FOR ELECTROPLATED HARD CHROMIUM COATINGS, USING AS THE BASIS "REINFORCED" ELECTROLESS NICKEL PLATING, THEREBY SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCING THE CONSUMPTION OF CHROMIUM.
IN THIS RESEARCH PROGRAMME HARD "REINFORCED" ELECTROLESS PLATED NICKEL COATINGS WILL BE DEVELOPED EITHER BY DISPERSION HARDENING WITH POWDERED CERAMICS SUCH AS AL2O3 AND SIC, OR BY ALLOYING WITH MOLYBDENUM OR TUNGSTEN. TO ENSURE THE DEPOSITION OF VERY HOMOGENEOUS LAYERS OF HIGH STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, PULSE PLATING TECHNIQUES WILL BE APPLIED.
THE PROGRAMME WILL CONSIST OF THREE PHASES:
- LABORATORY-SCALE DEVELOPMENT;
- PLATING AT A PRE-PRODUCTION LEVEL;
- UPGRADING TO INDUSTRIAL SCALE.
AS THE OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK IS TO DEVELOP COATINGS WHICH MAY REPLACE WEAR RESISTANT HARD CHROMIUM LAYERS UNDER ALMOST ALL TECHNICAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING THOSE WHICH USUALLY CAUSE SEVERE WEAR, SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE CHARACTERIZATION OF WEAR RESISTANCE UNDER A VARIETY OF APPLICATION-SIMULATING CONDITIONS, I.E. DRY AND BOUNDARY LUBRICATED SLIDING WEAR (SIMULATING SLIDING BEARINGS), FRETTING CORROSION (WEAR UNDER CONDITIONS OF OSCILLATORY MOTION), ABRASION (EMERY PAPER TEST) AND SLURRY-EROSION.
IN ADDITION, THE COATINGS WHICH EXHIBIT GOOD TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE WILL BE CHARACTERIZED STRUCTURALLY.
THIS IS A JOINT RESEARCH EFFORT WITH TNO, THE NETHERLANDS, (SUM-047-NL)
