Objective
TO OBTAIN THE FUNDAMENTAL DATA NECESSARY TO REDUCE THE CHROMIUM CONTENT IN CERTAIN STAINLESS STEELS TO 12%. TO IMPROVE THE CORROSION INHIBITION PROPERTIES OF SUCH STAINLESS STEELS BY SMALL ADDITIONS OF SI, AL, MO AND CU.
ABOUT 15 AUSTENITIC AND AUSTENITIC-FERRITIC STAINLESS STEEL METS, CONTAINING 12% CR; 10-11% NI; 1-4% SI; 1-2% AL;0.5-1% MO AND CU, WILL BE PREPARED. TEST PIECES IN THE FORM OF PLATED WILL BE SUBJECTED TO MICROGRAPHICAL EXAMINATION AFTER RECEIVING SUITABLE ANNEALING OR HEAT TREATMENT. THE MEASUREMENT, ON SOME SAMPLES, OF THE ISOTHERMAL OXIDATION KINETICS, IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF SMALL ADDITIONS OF SI, AL, MO AND CU, WILL BE CARRIED OUT, IN SOME CASES BY SULPHIDIZATION. MODERN SURFACE LAYER ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED TO INVESTIGATE THE SURFACE LAYERS FORMED. SURFACE GROWTHS PRODUCED BY ELECTROCHEMICAL POTENTIOSTATIC MEANS WILL BE STUDIED BY SIMILAR METHODS. IN ADDITION, LOCALIZED CORROSION, AND SPECIMENS WILL BE INVESTIGATED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR CORROSION RESISTANCE PROPERTIES.
THE POSSIBILITY WILL BE STUDIED OF IMPROVING THE CORROSION RESISTANCE BY ANODIC PRE-TREATMENT OR BY HIGH TEMPERATURE PRE-OXIDATION WHICH CAN ASSIST IN THE FORMATION OF PROTECTIVE LAYERS.
THIS WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN FULL COLLABORATION WITH CEBELCOR, BELGIUM (SUM-045-B) AND WITH CREUSOT-LOIRE, FRANCE (SUM-013-F), WHO WILL ACT AS COORDINATOR OF THE PROJECT.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
