DEVELOPMENT OF A SIMULTANEOUS SPRAYING AND MELTING PROCESS BY A SUPERPOSED PLASMA ARC (BLOWN AND TRANSFER-ARC).

Objective

TO DEVELOP A HIGH ABRASION RESISTANT COATING BY A SUPERPOSED PLASMA ARC PROCESS.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW PROCESS WHICH COMBINES THE ADVANTAGES OF PLASMA-SPRAYING AND PLASMA-RECHARGING WILL BE CARRIED OUT ESPECIALLY RELATED TO THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH ABRASION-RESISTANT COATINGS, USING CW PARTICLES. SUCH COATINGS WILL FIND APPLICATION, FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE FABRICATION OF THE CUTTING EDGE OF TOOLS.
THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL INCLUDE THE REALIZATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE SUPERPOSED ARC PROCESS. IN PARTICULAR THE FOLLOWING WILL BE INVESTIGATED:
- THE BLOWN-PLASMA-JET IN WHICH THE PARTICLES ARE INJECTED AND HEATED;
THIS METHOD ALLOWS THE DEPOSITION OF ALL KINDS OF MATERIALS AND ESPECIALLY THE METALLIC OR NON-METALLIC HARD-MATERIALS RESISTANT TO THE ABRASION;
- THE PLASMA-RECHARCHING USING A TRANSFERRED-PLASMA ARC TO THE METAL-SUBSTRATE; THIS ARC MELTS LOCALLY THE SURFACE OF THE SUBSTRATE AND EVENTUALLY HELPS THE PARTICLE-MELTING PROCESS THUS PRODUCING A METALLIC BATH WELDED TO THE SUNSTRATE. THIS PROCESS ALLOWS THE REALIZATION OF FIRMLY ADHESIVE AND THICK COATINGS.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PROCESS REQUIRES A STUDY OF THE PROPER INJECTION TECHNIQUE OF THE PARTICLES AND THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE FINALLY OBTAINED PRODUCT BY THE DIFFERENT PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL ANALYSES SO AS TO OPTIMIZE THE COATING PROPERTIES AS A FUNCTION OF THE SPRAYING PARAMETERS.
THE NEW COMBINED PROCESS ALLOWS:
- A PRE-MELTING OF PARTICLES BY THEIR INTRODUCTION INTO THE BLOWN-ARC AND THEIR TRANSPORT TO THE WORKPIECE;
- A CONTRIBUTION OF THE TRANSFERRED ARC TO THE NECESSARY LOCAL HEATING OF THE WORKPIECE TO PROVIDE THE WELDING OF THE PRE-MELTED PARTICLES;
- THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A REGULAR AND HOMOGENEOUS COATING, DUE TO THE PENETRATION OF THE PARTICLES INTO THE PLASMA JET BEFORE THEY REACH THE SUBSTRATE. PENETRATION OPTIMIZATION WILL BE THROUGH THE USE OF A SPECIAL NEW INJECTION DEVICE.

THIS PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT AS A TOTALLY JOINT VENTURE WITH CREUSET LOIRE, FRANCE, (SUM-050-) AND UNIVERSITE DE LIMOGES, FRANCE, (SUM-015-F) THE T.H. EINDHOVEN WILL CONCERN ITSELF WITH THE INVESTIGATION OF THE HOMOGENEITY OF THE DEPOSITED COATINGS USING AN INJECTION PROCESS NEWLY DEVELOPED AT ITS LABORATORY.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
