DEVELOPMENT OF INJECTION MOULDED SINTERED TURBINE COMPONENTS OF ALUMINIUM-DOPED ALPHA SIC. .

Objective

TO REACH THE TEST STAGE OF ALUMINIUM-DOPED SINTERED ALPHA SIC RADIAL ROTORS IN A TURBO-CHARGED DIESEL ENGINE UNDER ACTUAL DRIVING CONDITIONS.

THE COMPONENTS TO BE PRODUCED UNDER THIS PROGRAMME ARE SINGLE AXIAL TURBINE BLADES AS WELL AS STRENGTH TEST BARS AND RADIAL TURBINE ROTORS FOR EXHAUST GAS TURBOCHARGERS BY THE NEAR NET SHAPE INJECTION MOULDING PROCESS.

AN ALPHA SILICON CARBIDE POWDER OF SUBMICRON PARTICLES TOGETHER WITH SMAL AMOUNTS OF SINTERED ADDITIVES (AL, C) IS BLENDED WITH A MIXTURE OF BINDERS PRODUCING A MATERIAL EXHIBITING THERMOPLASTIC BEHAVIOUR FOR MOULDING.

THE QUALITY OF THE BINDER USED IN COMPOUNDING MUST BE SELECTED TO ACHIEVE A USEFUL GREEN DENSITY OF THE MOULDED PART. VARIOUS KNEADING AND PELLETIZING METHODS WILL BE TESTED. THE INJECTION MOULDING OPERATION WILL BE OPTIMIZED TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE DESIGN, MOULDING TEMPERATURE, PRESSURE AND VELOCITY.

FIRING AT DIFFERENT GAS ATMOSPHERES AND HEATING RATES WILL BE CARRIED OUT. PRECAUTION WILL BE TAKEN TO AVOID BLISTER FORMATION DURING THE BINDER REMOVAL AND WARPING DUE TO SHRINKAGE DURING FINAL HIGH TEMPERATURE SINTERING.

THE SINTERED BARS WILL BE SUBMITTED TO CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND PHASE EXAMINATION; MICROSTRUCTURE, PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES WILL BE DETERMINED.

THE OPTIMIZED PROCESS WILL LEAD TO THE FABRICATION OF SEVERAL PRODUCTION LOTS SHOWING A MINIMUM OF FLAWS. A NUMBER OF AXIAL BLADES AND RADIAL ROTORS WILL BE TESTED IN-HOUSE AND INDUSTRIALLY.

THE EVALUATION OF PROPERTIES WILL BE MADE PARTLY TOGETHER WITH ENS DES MINES ST. ETIENNE. COLD AND HOT SPIN TESTS ARE FORESEEN TO BE CARRIED OUT AT VOLKSWAGENWERK AG, WOLFSBURG.
