Objective
DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CERAMIC/CERAMIC COMPOSITES, ON THE SOL-GEL PROCESS, WITH THE VIEW TO APPLYING SUCH MATERIALS IN AREAS SUCH AS GAS TURBINE ENGINES AND DIESEL MOTORS.
/
THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
- A CHOICE WILL BE MADE OF THE MATRIX FROM AMONGST THE REFRACTORY OXIDES SIO2, AL 203, ZRO2, EITHER PURE OR IN COMBINATION WITH EACH OTHER;
- STUDIES WILL BE MADE ON PREPARATION CONDITIONS OF THE CORRESPONDING GELS, AND MEASUREMENTS OF VISCOSITY WILL BE UNDERTAKEN;
- STUDIES OF GEL-FIBRES-INTERACTION DURING THE DRYING AND THE DENSIFICATION PROCESS WILL BE MADE; THE USED FIBRES WILL BE SIC, AL2O3 AND BORON ALUMINO-SILICATE. OBSERVATIONS ON WETTING, FIBRE-MATRIX BONDING, MATRIX SHRINKAGE WILL BE THE MAIN FOCUS OF ATTENTION;
- CHOICE OF MATRIX AS A FUNCTION OF FACTORS SUCH AS POROSITY, MORPHOLOGY, MELTING POINT AND THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENT, WILL BE EVALUATED,
- DEVELOPMENT OF IMPREGNATION AND THERMAL TREATMENT PROCESSES WILL BE STUDIED;
- OPTIMIZATION OF DENSIFICATION CYCLE NUMBER, TO OBTAIN COMPOSITES WITH HIGH MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND LOW BRITTLENESS;
- CHARACTERIZATION OF THE BEST COMPOSITES AS TO THEIR MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE, THEIR BEHAVIOUR IN AN OXIDIZING ATMOSPHERE AND THEIR THERMAL CHARACTERIZATION AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE WILL ALSO BE UNDERTAKEN.
THIS PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH THE COLLABORATION OF THE CNRS GLASS LABORATORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTPELLIER (FRANCE).

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
