POWDER CHARACTERIZATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF FABRICATION AND PROCESSING FOR SILICON-BASED ENGINEERING CERAMICS.

Objective

DEVELOPMENT OF OPTIMUM PROCESSING ROUTES FOR THE PREPARATION OF FULLY DENSE SILICON CERAMICS FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS.

SILICON-BASED CERAMICS SUCH AS SIN4, SIC AND SIALONS, HAVE PROPERTIES WHICH MAKE THEM EXCELLENT CANDIDATE MATERIALS FOR ADVANCED ENERGY, HIGH TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS IN, FOR EXAMPLE, ENGINE AND WEAR COMPONENTS, AND HEAT EXCHANGERS. THE BEST PROPERTIES ARE ACHIEVED IN THE FULLY SENDE FORM OF THE MATERIAL WHICH DEPENDS AMONGST OTHER FACTORS ON THE USE OF FINE GRAINED POWDERS, THE APPLICATION OF SINTERING ADDITIVES, THE USE OF REPRODUCIBLE FORMING PROCESSES AND OPTIMIZED FIRING CONDITIONS.
THE PROJECT WILL CONCENTRATE ON SI3N4 AND THE SIALONS IN THE EARLY STAGES, WITH SIC TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION LATER ON.

THE WORK WILL INCLUDE:

- CHARACTERIZATION OF AVAILABLE RESEARCH AND COMMERCIAL POWDER IN TERMS OF MORPHOLOGY AND SINTERABILITY;
- DESIGN OF FORMING PROCESSES CAPABLE OF YIELDING STRUCTURES HOMOGENEITY;
- ASSESSMENT OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE FABRICATED COMPONENTS.

RECOMMENDATIONS WILL BE GIVEN AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROJECT AS TO THE BEST AND MOST ECONOMICAL MEANS OF FABRICATING SUCH HIGH DENSITY MATERIALS.

THIS PROJECT IS A FULLY COLLABORATIVE ONE BETWEEN NIHE, LIMERICK, CENTRE DE RECHERCHE DE L'INDUSTRIE BELGE DE LA CERAMIQUE (CRIBC), BELGIUM (SUT-117-B), MATERIALS ENGINEERING CENTRE (MEC), HARWELL, UK (SUT-121-UK) AND DEPARTMENT OF CERAMICS, LEEDS UNIVERSITY (UK),. NIHE (LIMERICK) WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE FIRING AND PHYSICAL PROPERTY PARTS OF THE PROJECT. IN PARTICULAR, THEY WILL BE CONCERNED WITH THE ROLE OF ADDITIVES IN THE PROCESSING OF SUCH SILICON-BASED CERAMICS.
