EVALUATION OF CERAMIC MATERIALS FOR USE IN DIESEL ENGINES.

Objetivo

THE SELECTION OF INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTABLE PROCEDURES FOR TESTING OF CERAMIC MATERIALS FOR USE IN DIESEL ENGINES AND THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A STANDARD ENGINE.

THE RESEARCH PROJECT WILL INITIATE AN EXAMINATION OF THE PROBLEMS FACING DESIGNERS OF DIESEL ENGINES WHO, THROUGH THE MEAGRE QUANTITY OF SUITABLE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA AVAILABLE ON THE PROPERTIES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF CERAMIC MATERIALS RELATIVE TO THEIR USEFULNESS IN ENGINE COMPONENTS, FACE SEVERE DESIGN PROBLEMS. EARLIER WORK ON A 500CC DIESEL ENGINE HIGHLIGHTED MANY SUCH PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTED WAYS IN WHICH PRACTICAL RESEARCH MIGHT BE DIRECTED TO THEIR SOLUTION. THE SECOND PHASE WILL INCLUDE THE CONSTRUCTION OF A LIST OF PROCEDURES BY WHICH THE CHARACTERIZATION OF SUITABLE CERAMIC MATERIALS CAN BE MADE.

DURING THE THIRD PHASE, A 1 LITRE SINGLE CYLINDER ENGINE WILL BE DESIGNED WHICH WILL BE CAPABLE OF BEING INTEGRATED AS A "STANDARD" ENGINE AS FAR AS CERAMIC MATERIAL EVALUATION IS CONCERNED.

THE FINAL PHASE WILL INCLUDE THE MANUFACTURE, ASSEMBLY AND TESTING OF A PROTOTYPE OF SUCH AN ENGINE DESIGN WHICH WILL BE MADE OF CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS AND WHICH WILL RUN WITH A CONVENTIONAL COOLING SYSTEM. HOWEVER, THE PROVISION WILL BE MADE TO SUBSTITUTE A CERAMIC CYLINDER AND PISTON ASSEMBLY WHEN IT IS DEEMED DESIRABLE. THE CERAMIC CYLINDER AND PISTON ASSEMBLY WILL BE OF A MONOBLOC-TYPE OF EITHER COMPOSITE OR CERAMIC COATING ON METAL FABRICATED MATERIALS.

ADTEC TEO (IRELAND) WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE FORM OF A SUBCONTRACT IN THIS PROJECT, AND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN (IRELAND), IMPERIAL COLLEGE, LONDON (UK), BROWN BOVERI LABORATORIES (WEST GERMANY) AND JRC PETTEN ARE ALL EXPECTED TO COLLABORATE IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE PROGRAMME.
