Objectif
The objectives of the project on the mathematical modelling of HIV-infection were:
1 to strengthen the link between data collection (epidemiological surveillance), statistical data analysis and mathematical modelling (forecasting, reconstruction, simulation) with respect to the HIV/AIDS epidemic;
2 to stimulate integration of various disciplines (epidemiology, virology, immunology, social sciences and economy) involved in AIDS-research using mathematics, applied statistics and scenario analysis in support of public health planning.
It cannot be denied that the development and application of an efficient methodology for predicting the spread of HIV infections and the quantitative evaluation of possible interventions, are needed continuously for decisions concerning public health and choices of control strategies. Motivated choices of these strategies to minimize the transmission of HIV, have to take into account both medical/epidemiological, as well as socio-cultural, ethological and economic information. Mathematical modelling techniques can help to integrate this information into an efficient methodology for the prediction of future cases, the quantitative evaluation of possible interventions and associated consequences regarding the impact of AIDS on the society. The EC Concerted Action on Mathematical Modelling of HIV Infection aimed to stimulate construction and application of these techniques.
Among the main activities of the Concerted Action, one may cite:
1 the organisation of workshops devoted to the development and application of mathematical methods (models, statistical techniques) for the assessment of the impact of HIV/AIDS on society,
2 the organisation of meetings of small working groups to prepare the workshop programmes with respect to the quality of data to be used in models, the scope and application of models, linking epidemiological models and social aspects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic,
3 the development of internationally comparable indicators for the socio-economic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic,
4 software development to facilitate the application of the mathematical methods and
5 reporting on the above mentioned workshops and issuing of scientific joint publications.
