Centralized facility for the epidemiology of AIDS

Objetivo

The main objectives of the concerted action, defined as a centralized facility, were to provide accurate basic information to research teams and public health departments working on AIDS epidemiology and to produce specific analyses on the epidemiological trends of the AIDS/HIV epidemic. During the contract period 1991-1992, an exploratory research on the problems and possibilities of developing coordinated surveillance activities in Europe on sexually transmitted diseases, including hepatitis B, and tuberculosis, was included in the objectives.
The European Centre for the Epidemiological Monitoring of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) (ECEMA) has been collecting, analysing and distributing epidemiological data on AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the countries of the European region since 1984. All member states and the Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) countries participate by providing standardized data on AIDS surveillance and HIV infection, using a common case definition. Databases are regularly updated by national correspondents to produce quarterly surveillance reports and specific analyses. Free copies of databases are available, upon request, to national correspondents and scientific teams. These databases mainly include the European nonaggregate AIDS data set (ENAADS), which by December 1992, included individual case reports for 99.6% of the 87 428 AIDS cases reported in the European region, and the European HIV prevalence database which contains detailed information on methods, population and results of HIV surveys.

In order to develop coordinated surveillance approaches, the Centre conducted in 1991-1992 a survey of existing activities on sexually transmitted diseases including hepatitis B and tuberculosis because of the potential impact of HIV infection on tuberculosis. A meeting was organized to produce practical recommendations for the development of public health surveillance European Community (EC) and COST countries in November 1992.
