Objective THERE ARE TWO COMMERCIAL TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE FOR DRYING OF PAPER or other webs without contact: infrared (IR) powered either by gas or electricity and convection air drying. IR is characterized by an efficient energy transfer by IR RADIATION. Gas or steam heated convection air dryeng is good in mass transfer i.e removing evaporeted moisture from the paper web and stabilizing the web with nanocontact nozzle technology. The problems with current nanocontact dryer technologies are: poor energy effiency (25% - 35%) of electrical IRs and poor web stabilizingh capability. Gas IRs have medium energy efficiency (35 - 45%) with satisfactory noncontact , floatation air dryers have good energy efficiency (50 - 60%) with efficient mass transfer and exellent web handling i.e runnability, but they are bulky in the physical size .The size of the dryer is important especially in rebuids (limited space ) but also in new machines , resulting in capital savings in the machine hall built.
