MAGNETIC TELEMETRY MEASUREMENT WHILE DRILLING (MWD) SYSTEM

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a commercial MWD telemetry system based on the use of high sensitivity YIG or SQUID magnetometer receivers, and a solid state magnetic field data transmitter. The demonstration will prove the ability of the equipment to provide directional measurements in a representative drilling environment using a telemetry system exhibiting higher reliability and data rate potential then a conventional mud pulse based system.
The energy technology objectives of the project are to achieve a significant and highly beneficial impact on the ecology and economics of energy recovery from marginal oil and gas fields. This will result from a radical improvement of data flow from the drill head to the driller that can be used to improve drilling control, and subsequently reduce drilling time and costs, particularly in marginal fields.L%

Innovative technology is to be used to produce an improved method of telemetry from the drill head to the driller at the surface. The project will use a solid state magnetic telemetry MWD (measurement while drilling) system to replace the standard mud pulse system used widely in the oil and gas industry. This new technology addresses the problems of reliability associated with the mechanical mud pulse systems and has the potential for significantly higher data rates. The system comprises of a transmitter mounted at the bottom of the drilling assembly which propagates a modulated low frequency magnetic field into the surrounding formation, and a very sensitive receiver located at the surface close to the drilling rig. The receiver is based on a gradiometer array of SQUID magnetometers and can detect minute magnetic fields in the presence of magnetic interference.
"Geosteering", or using geological sensors to "steer" the oil well so that the drill bit always remains within the payzone is widely used in horizontal wells but with limited success because of the relatively low data transmission rates achieved by current mud pulse MWD systems. The higher data rate of a magnetic telemetry system will enable oil companies to navigate bore holes more effectively using geological sensors such as IDS's propagated wave resistivity (PWR) sensor. Transmission of other parameters such as pressure, weight on bit, and torque cannot be effectively utilised with the current data rate restrictions.
Electric dipole transmitters have been used for MWD purposes but are dependent upon the geological formation, whereas a magnetic telemetry system will not be effected significantly by the resistivity of the geological strata. The economic and environmental benefits gained by greater reliability and faster data communications is an essential part of improving the effectiveness and economy of drilling operations. Consequently drilling costs and ecological damage would be considerablyreduced and production rates from marginal fields significantly improved. The ultimate result of this project will have a highly beneficial impact on the ecology and economics of energy supply.
