SPOOLABLE COMPOSITE FLOW LINE FOR OFFSHORE USE, C-FLOW

Objectif

The aim of the project is to run a full qualification of a composite flow line pipe to demonstrate that these small diameter pipe lines are suitable for :
1. Transportation of hydrocarbons, and
2. Transportation of sea water for water injection;
The composite flow lines will be within the dimensions 100-250 mm, with a pressure rating in the 100 to 350 bar range. In order for the oil industry to commercially exploit Spoolable composite flow lines, there is a need to qualify and demonstrate the product, the end connectors, the installation, and the operation. Also, the writing of engineering specifications and design manuals are important elements in demonstrating the technology.
The design phase is almost completed. Loads for a composite flow line has been identified and defined. Rules and regulations have also been identified. A number of designs has been analyzed both with simple methods and with Finite Element Method. An end connection has been designed and analysed and is under manufacturing. Also, in the Manufacturing Phase several flow line laminates has manufactured. A total 270 m with inner diameter from 63 mm to 100 mm of different designs has been made. Characterization testing of some of the pipes is completed. Results so far are encouraging and meet both the requirement for bending and for pressure containment.
The technical innovation is continuous pipe manufacturing of composite flow line pipes for offshore use as hydrocarbon flow lines or water injection lines. COMPIPE has developed the manufacturing process. Long lenghts of several km can be manufactured without joints and spolled onto a spool or reel for storage, transport and installation. Advanced fibers such as carbon fiber, glass fiber as well as epoxy resins are used. Composite material flow lines has not been used offshore up till now, however, composite flow lines are commonly used onshore today. Handling, transport and installation is possible offshore from a spool placed on an installation ship.
Offshore flow lines are typically a few km long and between 4-16 inch in diameter. Flow lines are usually constructed from coated carbon steel, Duplex steel, or 13% Cr steel or flexible pipes. A cost comparison shows that continuous composite material flow lines are an economically feasible alternative in comparison with conventional solutions. Cost saving on pipe material and fabrication ranges flow lines compared to Duplex steel. Costs for composite flow lines are higher than for coated carbon steel flow lines.
The result of the project is to technically demonstrate and qualify a composite flow line for sub sea use. Once this type of line is qualified and demonstrated, specific work towards specific oil field applications can be started. Demonstration will be performed by first simulating installation conditions for a period of approx. 1 year. The users of this technology requires this type of demonstration prior to a full scale commercial installation sub sea.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
