DEEP WATER SUCTION PILE INSTALLATION

Objectif

The aim of this project is the development, design and manufacturing of equipment capable of embedding piles into the seabed by emplacement of suction. The equipment is designed for deep and very deep water. Furthermore a preliminary test in shallow water shows the functionning of the equipment and leads to first improvements. Finally a test installation in approximately 1000m of waterdepth is performed and leads to the second step of improvements.
In addition to the equipment the development and design of the suction pile for the test installation in deep water is part of this project. Prerequisite to the design of a suction pile is the theorical prediction of its bearing capacity. Hence a simulation model for the installation and the loading is developed within this project. Finally a load test of the installed pile will be performed to validate the theorical hypotheses discovered.L%
The key requirements of a SPU (Section Pump Unit) have been identified and addressed. Due to the long delay between the project concept setup and the project start the design concept has been outdated meanwhile. Competing concepts use ROV as power supply units. Since ROV are currently standard equipment for offshore installations this technique offers major handling and cost advantages in comparison to the originally intended stand alone version. The ROV based suction unit seems to be not applicable to this project since it would require high investments with no realistic prospect of return on investment. Existing equipment and techniques have been evaluated very carefully before the start of the project. However it must be concluded that it must be performed more intensively. An strict evaluation of marketing concepts is necessary during the concept phase of the project. the dissemination concept of the developed technique and equipment is more important that recognized at the beginning.
The phenomenon used for the suction pile method is the force acting onto closed obstacles submerged in a body of fluid. A pressure difference between the inside and the outside of this obstacles produces resulting forces.
The suction pile is closed at one end and open at the other. The open end is placed onto the sea floor. The closed end is connected to a pump. Operating this pump produces a volume flow from the inside to the outside of the pile and hence the pressure inside the pile decreases. The resulting pressure difference leads to force acting in direction of gravity and pressing the pile into the seabed. As soon as the weight force and the resulting force of the suction reaches the soil resistance the pile starts penetrating into the seabed.
In case the operation direction of the pump module is reversed water is pumped from the outside of the pile to the inside. Hence the pressure inside the pile increases and leads to forces acting against gravity. As soon as the resulting force are greater than the weight force and the friction forces of the pile, it starts moving out of the seabed.
