THE PROCESSING TOOL FOR STEP WISE SEISMIC INVERSION

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to implement and test a ready-to-use software system for three key elements of the DELPHI research project.
(DELPHI involves extensive research in the field of stepwise seismic inversion). The selected three key elements are (sub)surface related multiple elimination, optimal illumination of target zones and inversion. Application of this software will give the interpreter more accurate and more detailed insight in the subsurface, thus reducing overall drilling activities and increasing chances of oil discoveries.L%
The results of the project in this stage consist of the following documents, released to the sponsors, and in bound format to be submitted as Technical Report to the EEC :
- The Software Project Management Plan version 1.0 October 1991.
- The Software Quality Assurance Plan version 1.0 November 1991.
- The Multiple Elimination Prototype Test Report vs 1.0 January 1991.
- The Software Requirements Specifications vs 1.0 April 1992.
- The Global Software Design Description vs 1.0 May 1992
- Database Design Description vs 1.0 May 1992
- Display SRS/SDD vs 1.0 May 1992.
- IO library functions vs 1.0 May 1992
- Software Test Plan vs 1.0 May 1992
- The Software Requirements Specifications vs. 2.0 June 1993
- Delsi User Documentation vs. 0.6 June 1993
- Delsi User Documentation vs. 1.0 February 1994.
- Delsi User Documentation vs. 1.2 July 1994
- Delsi software validation report November 1994
In addition five software releases were sent to the sponsors; a prototype User Interface was released in May 1992 and a pre-release of the actual software was sent April 1993 and an update to the pre-release was sent in June 1993. The first official version was released in February 1994. The final version was released in July 1994.
Conventional seismic processing methods consist of the three parts; preconditioning, common midpoint stacking and post stack time migration to render a preview of the subsurface from seismic shot records. The stepwise seismic inversion (the DELPHI scheme) may be considered as a very promising alternative to the conventional seismic processing, also making use of shot record intput data, yet yielding a wealth of information after each inversion step. The proposed seismic software will consist of three layers; the first software layer generates a homogeneous non reflecting earth surface. The second layer provides a depth image of the surface in terms of reflectivity. Finally the third software layer will result in accurate, target oriented stratigraphic and lithologic parameters, i.e. velocity and density maps and, above all, rock/pore parameters. Each layer forms an innovative part, for which appropriate industrial software needs to be implemented. The selected key elements of theDELPHI research scheme (sub)surface related multiple elimination, optimal illumination and stratigraphic inversion) each represent a part of one of the above mentioned layers.
The additional innovative aspect of the project is the realization of flexible, maintainable, open and expandable software and its testing on real data sets. It aims at painless integration of the individual, single-discipline E&P applications and all E&P information, through the usage of a single data model, and through a standardized user interface system.
