Objective
The objective of the project is to prove the viability of the innovatory life-cycle design techniques developed in the previous project (TH/03284/88) by applying them to practical engineering situations.
The sensitivity of life-cycle cost to design variables and the effect of life-cycle design on the final design will be established through practical application. Furthermore the method will be applied to existing floating structures in order to verify calculation results in practice as well as to assess it's application for structural requalification of existing floating structures.L%
Method has been proven applicable to life-cycle design as well as inspection planninng.
Life-cycle design, based on reliability theory, is aimed at optimization of the total costs incurred over the intended life-cycle of a structure from initial design to scrapping.
Progress in the theory of reliability calculations is not yet accompanied by progress in the practical application of this theory. Marine design, based on reliability theory, is still more of theoretical rather than of practical value. The innovatory nature of this project is to bring the application of life-cycle design, based on reliability theory, to the engineering practice.
Life-cycle design is especially relevant to floating structures needed for the development of marginal offshore oil and gas fields. The relatively low yield of such fields requires that the total cost of field development be optimized in order to be at all profitable.
In the course of the project alternative structural details of a new design will be evaluated with respect to life-cycle cost to establish the sensitivity to small changes. Case studies will be prepared of existing vessels. These serve to verify calculation results and demonstrate the use of life-cycle design to requalification of existing vessels for extended or different types of operation.
