Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economical feasibility of combined installation for coring and penetration. The installation can operate in seas up to 2000 m deep. Quality of the cores and cone testing is remarkebly improved. Costs of carrying out coring and CPT is reduced. Improved safety of seabed installations by improved data.
The installation consists of the following main components :
A. Coring installation
The vibrator head is a combined vibrator block and powerpack, assembled in a suspension yoke. The vibratorblock is constructed as a pressure-resisting gearbox in which two eccentric weights are placed. The eccentrics and the hydraulic motors are housed in a steel construction, suspended in rubber (elastomers) blocks. The core length is 6 m. B. Cone penetration device
Pushing of the device with a constant speed of 2 cm/sec is performed by two hydromotors that drive a worm screw unit. Data are transferred to the ship in sequenced form. Sealing in respect to high water pressure is designed to maintain measuring accuracy. The penetration depth is 6 m.
C. Frame
The rig consists of two vertical guided tubes. The vibrator slides along these tubes. The tubes are fitted into a head and a base and simply pinned into place. Both head and base are steel constructions shaped like irregular octogans. Top and base frame are strengthened by waire braces from top to bottom. A vane prevents the tool from turning by seacurrents. Four, hydraulically controlled, extension legs are mounted to the frame. The base contains a quik-release guideance system that permits to snap out the core barrel or the cone tube.
D. Cable
The cable is a combined power-hoist umbilical. The steel armoured, torque balanced cable has a breaking strength of at least 10 tons. The cable is equipped with 6 power conductors (1000 V), 10 power conductors (500 V) and two signal cables.
E. Control panel and instrumentation
For the control of the whole installation the following parameters are measured; rig attitude, an accoustic transducer, a sensor for the penetration depth, an accelerometer and extension leg functioning signals. All relevant data are modulated and sequently transmitted to the vessel. On board the signals are unmodulated, processed and stored.
