Objective
The aim of the project was to demonstrate the economical exploitation of marginal oil and gas fields by means of an innovative integrated technology. A number of minor hydrocarbon fields had been identified but these could not be developed because of the large investment required using standard technology. This was due to several factors: distance from existing facilities, small reserves associated with low productivity problems, high environmental impact (including restricted access to locations and protected areas), etc. It should be pointed out that the required savings for economical development could only be partially obtained through reduction in well size. This new overall approach achieves a global cost reduction of at least 25%.
The rig was field tested and after the first two wells were drilled a promising learning curve could be identified; Drilling Time Reduction 16-30%; Cost reduction 12-16%.
The project demonstrated the possibility of achieving a low cost, environmental friendly drilling system with integrated services that can be used to develop oil and gas reservoirs which are not economically exploitable with current standard technology, the main innovations are :
All functions and components of the drilling rig are totally hydraulically controlled.
Recently patented telescopic mast and vertical pipe racking system (patent n. 9212752.57 and 08/117983).
The main contractor also provides the integrated service. Fully hydraulic power swivel. Possible to automize drilling operations.
The project was concluded with field testing: 3 wells to a max. depth of 2000 m were drilled with the G-100 drilling rig manufactured by Soilmec (not an eligible cost).
After field testing, and based on the results of the reliability of the integrated drilling rig and equipment used, Soilmec designed and manufactured a new drilling rig, G-125, derived from the G-100 drilling rig. The improved capability of the G-125 rig makes it possible to reach a max. depth of 3000 m. which was the target of the project. The G-125 drilling rig was subsequently field tested by drilling a well. The slim casing profile was designed by Agip.
