STRATIGRAPHIC MODELLING OF THE BRENT DELTA NORTH SEA : A VALIDATION OF THE DIONISOS

Objetivo

The objectives of the project is to model the architecture of the dispositional systems through a simulation of simplified sedimentary processes. In order to do this, the DIONISOS software developed at IFP will be validated with an industrial data-set provided by oil companies. The case study is the Brent deltaic system, an important North Sea reservoir target, which represents an ideal case for testing and validating the DIONISOS software, which was specifically designed for the deltaic system simulation.
The final goal of this project is to reduce the risk involved in intensive exploration for hydrocarbons by predicting the location and gross geometry of the reservoirs in a sedimentary basin. In order to do this, computer simulations based on sedimentological and stratigraphic processes will be used to model the geometry of the depositional systems and their evolution through time in response to parameters which effect deposition are modelled, namely : sedimentary process, sediment supply, eustasy, subsidence and differential compaction. The result of the simulation is a 3D reconstruction of sedimentary facies architecture and of distribution of dominant lithologies at the basin scale. The simulation also agrees with well and seismic data through the application of an inversion loop. Different geological interpretations can be evaluated and compared by changing the input parameters of the simulation, thereby contributing to a reduction in the uncertainty of the final geological interpretation.
Work carried out during the reporting period :
- data gathering and
- compilation of well data base (147 wells)
- sedimentological analysis in a core workshop : 14 sedimentary facies have been defined.
The project will allow validation of the DIONISOS software and the associated stratigraphic simulation methodology developed by IFP on an industrial case study. A prototype of the DIONISOS software was developed in the frame of the JOULE II program, and has now been industrialised by IFP (see document enclosed). This software needs to be validated on a large data-set, in an industrial environment. The Brent case-study chosen for the validation implies the compilation of a very important subsurface data set : around 40 wells will be used in the project, together with regional seismic lines. Isopach maps will be also homogeneized. For simulation purposes, SUN and SILICON GRAPHICS (5.2) workstation will be used.
The stratigraphic simulation requires several kind of geological information coming from different disciplines :
- a sedimentological and sequence stratigraphy interpretation
- a seismic interpretation
- structural interpretation to intergrate the syn-sedimentary deformation of the basin.
The case study which has been selected for this validation is the Middle Jurassic Brent deltaic system of the UK and Norwegian North Sea. The study will be conducted first at a regional scale, in order to intergrate the upstraem and downstream pinch-out of the delta, before focusing on more limited specific ares at the prospect scale. The result of the simulation is a 3D lithofacies block. The demonstration of the software will be carried out with a blind test process. Around ten wells, randomly chosen in the initial data-base and not used to constrain the simulation, will be compared with pseudo-wells extracted from the simulation at the same location. This comparison will then validate the simulation.
