Objective
Incoming aggressive slugs and gas plugs in multiphase production equipment induces transient phenomena, which are very damaging mechanically for the equipment and lead to abnormal operating conditions : decrease of production efficiency, salt carry-over CO2 emission.
The aim of the project is to prove the reliability of a Dynamic Slug Control System (DYSCS). This system has two main functionalities :
. the detection of slug and gas plug arrival upstream from the element to be protected against bad or dangerous effects.
. the instruction which aims at protecting the equipment. Oil producers are obviously interested in preventing slug and plug effects on separators, pumps and meters; as well as in alleviating riser instabilities. Such improvements could greatly enhance their process control and increase the working life of equipment. Nowadays the equipment has to be oversized in order to withstand erratic operation; its efficiency decreases a lot due to slugs and gas plugs.
DYSCS computer code has been finalised using results of Pecorade (France) compaign. The DYSCS system is not completely validated, slugs on this production line being antificialy generated.
A gas terminal slug catcher appears to be the most appropriate device for the validation tests as its disfunctioning leads to both technical and economic consequences. The system was therefore implemented and tested on a slug catcher at the ELF-PETROLAND by site in Holland and now on a productionline at ELF-PECORADE in France. INNOVATION
- Conventional plants:
Increase of 3 phase separator efficiency, suppression of bulky slug catchers, prevention of riser instabilities.
- Innovative plants (marginal fields);
Compact separators, two phase pumps and unmanned platform equipment all monitored by DYSCS.
EXPECTED RESULTS
- Cost reduction of future marginal field equipment
- Offshore Compact Separators market share significant increase
- DYSVS market increase
- Environment
- Reduction of CO2 emissions by suppressing erratic burning in flares
- Reliability and working life increase (eg : salt problems)
- Reduction of maintenance costs (eg: salt problems).
