Objective
To manufacture and test a full-scale novel Compact Separator (known as I-SEP) under the conditions which represent real field operation applications. The separation duties include gas/liquid and solid separation. The aim is also to establish the full operation range and the sensitivity of performance to key design and operation conditions.The information gathered is also expected to lead to the generation of a tool for the design and predicting the performance of the unit for future field applications. The main overall aim is to demonstrate the performance of the unit and provide the key evidence which the industry needs before such devices are used in the oil and gas industry.
The compact separator (I-SEP), which is the subject of this project, is a novel unit developed by CALTEC and has been initially tested in CALTEC's laboratories with excellent results in terms of separation efficiency. The novel separator, I-SEP, is a patented double involute unit which uses cyclonic principle to generate high G forces to effect separation.
Its applications in the oil and gas industry cover a wide range whenever full or partial separation of gas-liquid or sand is required. The applications include downhole, subsea, offshore topsides and onshore, both as a stand-alone unit or as a retrofit, improving the capacity or performance of existing conventional separation systems. The size of the unit is only a fraction of the size of conventional separators. It is also a much simpler operation and control method. It requires no active pressure or level control. The project consists of designing and manufacturing a full-scale prototype model of I-SEP for gas-liquid and sand separation duties. The British Gas facilities at Bishop Auckland (North UK) will be modified for this project and a mixture of natural gas, condensate and sand will be used for the tests.
Some modelling work will be carried out with the aim of optimising the design and validating some of the assumptions made for the performance of the unit.
The tests will include a full range of flowrates, liquid loading and solid flowrates to represent a wide range of field conditions, including turn-down.
