PIPELINE AND RISER SAFETY EVALUATION

Objetivo

The purpose of the model developed in this project is to predict the probability with time of incidents which would result in an inventory release. The model may be used for three key purposes:
- Design decisions relating to pipeline and riser routeing near platforms and the effectiveness of different protection schemes.
- Safety evaluation and assessment of the remaining life of a pipeline.
- Determination of a suitable inspection and maintenance programme and assessment of the effectiveness of various inspection and remedial techniques to maintain fitness for service at an acceptable level of safety.
The tools developed are flexible to allow their application to different pipeline system configurations. Generic data regarding variations in aspects of the pipeline system, such as geometry and material properties and allowing for different inspection methods, are becoming available, as well as use of pipeline specific data within the model.
Hazard and consequence models. The models address three main areas; (i) Given a hazard, they assess damage potential, likelihood and consequences; (ii) Given a defect, they assess the remaining life; (iii) Given an inspection philosophy, they assess ability to maintain pipeline fitness-for-purpose.
The project has developed a computer based analysis model for the evaluation of subsea pipeline and riser safety and remaining useful life. The model combines evaluation of hazards, defect growth and likelihood of detection, probabilities of failure and consequences. Its main innovatory aspects are:
- The development of detailed hazard and failure likelihood models for subsea pipeline systems. This involves the identification, assessment and modelling of the factors which can lead to a failure.
Statistical data will be generated subjectively, based upon engineering knowledge and experience and available data, when directly relevant historical data are not accessible. In this way, it is possible to estimate the probability of occurence of incidents, such as anchor dragging or ship impact with internal risers, etc, or to estimate the probable extent of corrosion, growth of defects, etc.
- The evaluation of the consequences of loss of containment. This involves evaluation of the consequences of loss of containment, which is carried out at three levels (i) loss of equipment; (ii) environmental effects and (iii) loss of life. These factors are being examined in sufficient depth to determine the implications of various available options to deal with a particular form of failure, thus assisting decision making.
- The development of a computer knowledge based system, which can be used for the determination of risks associated with a pipeline system and aid in the decision making process. The system not only provides the user with knowledge and reasoning ability based on systematic use of data and analysis models, but also ensures that this capability is available even when the appropriate experts are inacessible. It also ensures that the latest guidelines and regulations are incorporated and included in safety assessments.

Programa(s)
