POSITIONING OF SEISMIC STREAMERS

Objective

In marine seismic surveys, a survey vessel tows at a constant speed a very low frequency acoustic source transmitting an acoustic pulse at regular time intervals, and a network of parallel acoustic line arrays (or steamers) devoted to the reception of the acoustic signal reflected by sub-bottom layers. The signals received on the streamers are coherently processed in order to form high quality images of sub-bottom geological structure. Accurate knowledge and control of streamers positions is essential for the quality of final seismic results.
The POSEIS proposal addresses the topic of absolute streamers positioning during marine seismic surveys. The main objective is higher efficiency of marine seismic surveys by increasing liability, positioning accuracy, and range of operation with respect to existing techniques, for a reduced cost. This will result in higher efficiency for the seismic vessels, better quality of seismic imaging and improved seismic interpretation.
The main expected results are :
- better accuracy, corresponding to an improvement with respect to existing systems and will allow better interpretation of seismic images,
- cost reduction associated to the removal of compass and acoustic units,
- increase reliability associated to compasses and acoustic units removal,
- reduction of vessel downtime : 2% depending on geographic area,
- environmental impact : removal of lithium batteries associated to the compass and acoustic units.
The innovative part of the POSEIS proposal is the demonstration of a technique based on the use of the back-scattered acoustic energy of the seismic source to find positions of streamer sections, combined with the use of existing seismic sensors. The potential advantages of this technique is that it is fully integrated to the system since it uses existing seismic (hydrophonic) channels as well as existing acoustic source, it is more accurate than existing systems, and more robust to propagation perturbations since it uses signal back-scattered from the bottom instead of horizontal paths.
The current proposal is focused on the at-sea demonstration of a fully integrated and existing accurate streamers positioning system for marine seismic surveys. The project will consist first in a design phase where the processing for streamers distances measurements and shape reconstruction will be adapted, tuned, implemented and tested on seismic data recorded in different areas. This phase will be performed on-shore on a scientific laboratory computer. In a second phase, in order to allow at-sea demonstration, an electronic interface between the flow of seismic data on-board survey vessels and a commercially available computer (workstation) will be developed. In this second phase, the processing software for streamers network reconstruction and display will be impelmented on the workstation and integrated with the data interface. This workstation will allow on-board storage and processing of the seismic data and off-line display of the streamers network position. Demonstration and evaluation by comparison to existing positioning system will be performed on-board during the monitoring phase, and the workstation will be available for further demonstration on shore on recorded data.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
