DUAL STRING METAL SEAL WELLHEAD 15,000 PSI

Objective

Realization of a dual string completion wellhead with metal to metal sealing elements for 15,000 psi working pressures, able to be used in high temperature and corrosive environments.
In oil wells, where two or more reservoirs are present, it results economically convenient to exploit two reservoirs contemporaneously and separately, by employing two dual string production tubings.
This technique is at present employed for W.P. up to 700 bar.
The 1st innovation in the project is that the wellhead is designed for W.P. up to 1050 bar.
The 2nd innovation consist in the provision of full metal seal.
This solution allows the new wellhead to be used in very severe service conditions: high temperature and corrosive environments for the presence of H2S and CO2.
The saving in the well investment cost coincides with the cost of a deep well drilling, which amounts to about 50 Litbillions. Considering a well depletion time of 20 years, it results E=2.5 Litbillion/y and the payback time 1.9 years.
The Task 1-Design, including the Finite Element Analysis, has been completed.
The Task 2-Manufacturing has been completed.
The Task 3-Assembling & Testing started on September '94 and it is now 80% completed.
Some new problems arised on tubing hanger locking system capacity and metal seal performance. Modifications would involve new design work and further experimental analysis requiring extension of the projects in terms of costs and schedule. This could be evaluated in case the Commission of the European Communities should agree on a further extension of the project.
In a number of hydrocarbons fields, two or more separate reservoirs are often present. In this case, it can be economically convenient to deplete the two reservoirs simultaneously, through separated production strings, by a dual completion, saving, in this way, the drilling cost of a further well.
The double string wellheads offered on the market, for the time being, are rated for up to 700 bar of W.P. In the case of extra deep wells (more than 6000 m depth) as the Villafortuna field, developed by AGIP in the PO Valley - Italy, the wellhead pressures are up to 1050 bar, besides there are very severe service conditions.
By the fact the envisaged prototype is designed for 1050 bar W.P. of rating.
The prototype, being realized with Superalloys and being provided with a full metal sealing system, is intended to work in particularly severe conditions for the presence of high temperature and aggressive fluids.
The profitability of the project for the realization of the innovative wellhead, cannot be considered in terms of energy saving, but only in terms of saving in the well investment cost.
In reality, the main advantage to utilize a double string wellhead is that it necessitates of one drilling operation only, in comparison with the two-ones needed by the conventional single completion wellheads.
Further saving result in financial terms, due to the shortening of the well depletion time, but this aspect is not considered in the following calculations.
In the above quoted terms, the saving in the well investment cost coincides with the cost of a deep well drilling, which amounts to about 50 Litbillions. Considering a well depletion time of 20 years, it results E = 2.5 Litbillions/y. The prototype will be installed on the Villafortuna well, held by AGIP. In the course of the experimentation on the production well, control tests will be performed and the maintenance will be assessed. Should all the controls be positive, the prototype will begin the production phase up to the full depletion of the well, it will be industrialized and its use will be promoted.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
