Objective
Sea urchin aquaculture has been practised in several countries to compensate for the decline of natural stock and to improve the production, which has been proved to be essential and effective. Natural stock of sea urchins in the Community is declining due to over-catching and environmental changes. The proposal aims to hold an advanced workshop for sea urchin aquaculture based on scientific natural stock management. Specialists will be invited as lecturers for the workshop from Europe, USA and Japan where advanced aquaculture for sea urchins are practised.
The workshop will offer participants:
(i) theoretical and practical lessons for the understanding of biological background and resource management of sea urchin stock,
(ii) acquisition of advanced techniques in sea urchin aquaculture.
The proposal includes the publication of a handbook to support further development of sea urchin aquaculture in the Community.
