Development of novel biological filters for the control of water quality parameters in aquaculture

Objective

Building on the strong synergy resulting from the complementary skills and interests of the partners, the main objectives of this proposal are:
(1), the identification of novel nitrifying bacterial species;
(2), the production of bacterial enrichment cultures;
(3), the identification of efficient substrates for their fixation and
(4), the design and testing of effective biofilters capable of efficiently removing toxic nitrogen compounds affecting Aquaculture systems.

The implementation of pioneering methodology under a systematic approach is expected to result in the availability of an effective nitrifying tool demanded by the Aquaculture industry where the use of conventional wastewater treatment technologies is not feasible (i.e. flow-through farms, open cages, rafts). The introduction of novel biofilters in a market where these products are lacking will contribute to reduce the environmental impact of farms.
