Perspectives of plant protein use in aquaculture: biological, environmental and socio-economic consequences

Objective

OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS
The final objectives of the project are to create conditions for the best utilization of plant protein sources in aquaculture feeds. The underlying objective is to strengthen and sustain the development of European aquaculture by reducing its reliance on fishmeal, derived mainly from the exploitation of marine natural resources.

Although much progress has been made in the partial replacement of fishmeal by a number of ingredients with variable degrees of success, consolidation of such discrete scientific findings is required using multiple criteria, with an adequate trans-disciplinary approach. While feeding fish with fish has been decried justifiably by all as a non-sustainable approach, practically since the early days of aquaculture, there are also misgivings about producing "vegetarian" fish which have theoretically carnivorous feeding behaviours under natural conditions.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
