Genetic implications in the production of rotifers in commercial finfish hatcheries

Objective

Rotifer clones will be isolated, from samples of commercial cultures, and genetically characterised. Five mixtures of these clones will be used in experiments to test the effect of culture conditions, methods and microbial flora on the genotypic diversity of the rotifers. Rotifer samples from Mediterranean hatcheries will be cultured in northern European systems, to check the adaptability of mass cultured rotifers.

The use of resting eggs to maintain a high genetic diversity in mass rotifer cultures will be tested. The production and harvest methods of resting eggs will be optimised. The genetic selection in different commercial cultures will be followed during various culture cycles. The findings from this project will be combined in a workshop for the industry.

Objectives
WP1: to set up a collection of genetically identifiable rotifer clones
WP2: to determine which culture method has a low effect on the genetic rotifer diversity
WP3: to determine the effects of stable versus variable
