Objective
The proposal is to support the 2001 Euro conference on Apoptosis. Dysfunction of apoptosis (program-med cell death) is involved in many diseases. It became an extremely competitive research area: in 2000, 13.040 apoptosis papers (=25% of all published within 30 years) appeared; only 30% from Europe. There is urgent need for coordination of work, rapid dissemination of knowledge to initiate new and to intensify existing networks, to develop future research priorities in the EU. For these purposes, the conference provides a unique platform by assembling the majority of European apoptosis researchers from different basic and applied areas; ultimately, to achieve a distinct European profile and to increase competitiveness in this field. Milestones:
(1) Dissemination of recent achievements in apoptosis research.
(2) Definition of strategies of future research.
(3) Identifying areas to initiate clinical trials.
(4) A press conference on the application of apoptosis research for prevention and treatment of diseases.
(5) Dissemination of a progress report (to be published in Cell Death & Differentiation).
