Advanced workshop on embryo research for interested parties (AWERIP)

Objective

Embryo research, stem cell technology and cell nuclear replacement are rapidly developing areas at the forefront of research which may have the potential to create new avenues for treating a wide range of severe and possibly fatal health conditions. The use of human embryos in research is sensitive and has attracted the attention of a wide range of different interest groups with a mixed response. The objective is to hold an advanced workshop by invitation for representatives of the major stakeholder groups from a variety of different scientific, cultural and legal perspectives in the EU to come together to discuss the issues generated by human embryonic stem cell research and its associated technology of cell nuclear replacement. Its aim will be to examine the issues which may influence the public and political debate that will determine whether or not research in this area is to be permitted and if so under what circumstances.
