Objectif
The community's health services face a proliferation of molecular genetic tests, the introduction of a bewildering array of methods to detect any single genetic lesion and potentially many different ways for reporting laboratory findings. These considerations and the increasing trend for tests to cross national boundaries suggest that an international approach to quality assessment, harmonisation and mutual recognition of national and regional schemes is needed. However, significant gaps in data and policy analysis may impede informed international action. The present proposal for a survey across OECD countries is intended as a first step towards international cooperation in this area.
