Objective
Although significant progress has been made in identifying molecular building blocks of memory, our understanding of memory at the level of neuronal circuits is limited. By combining technological, anatomical, physiological and behavioural approaches, this proposal aims to bridge the gap between molecules and behaviour by addressing four fundamental questions at the network level:
what types of memory are processed by the hippocampus;
what information flows into and out of the hippocampus during these stages of memory;
and what computations does the intrinsic hippocampus circuitry perform during each stage?
Development of new technology of use to neuroscientists throughout Europe is an integral part of the endeavour. The outcome will have profound implications for our understanding of information processing and memory at the network level in the brain.
