Bilingualism and brain plasticity: a multidisciplinary adaptive workshop

Objective

We propose to organize a 3-day workshop that will bring to Trieste 18 top experts in a diversity of allied fields, to discuss bilingualism and brain plasticity. It will also discuss second language acquisition in different conditions (during puberty, after puberty) of both signed and spoken language. The main research goals are to determine to what extent the age of acquisition of language influences the performance of speakers, in which areas of language these influences are more evident (phonology, morphology, syntax), how intensive training bears on the speakers' performance and what brain imaging studies can reveal about the organization and functioning of the language capacity. A parallel goal is the multidisciplinary advanced training of an equal number of younger researchers, who will be selected to participate in the workshop, while additional provisions have been made for the wider dissemination of its results.
