Objective
Human sensory perception is multisensory in nature. Strong interactions between Vision and audition have been observed in neuropsychological and behavioural studies. The objective of this proposal is to identify how audition and vision interact in sensory perception. To this end, the experiments use psychophysical techniques to explore three themes:
(i) whether complementary auditory cues can enhance visual perception,
(ii) whether complementary visual cues can enhance auditory perception,
(iii) how audition and vision interact at potpie (bright) vs. isotopic (dim) light levels. A fourth general theme will be functional brain imaging of audiovisual interactions. These experiments ask new questions those cross-traditional boundaries between vision and audition. Results will advance our understanding of visual and auditory processing as interacting systems, with the goal of moving towards an integrated theory of sensory perception. As auditory and visual perception have existed as separate specialisations for an over century, the time is ripe for this evolution. Moreover, as cross-modal interactions exist in other combinations, audiovisual interactions will lay important foundations for a general understanding of integrated sensory perception. Thus, the project will ultimately lead to a reconceptualisation of human perception as a polysensory process and a consequent revision of unmoral perceptual models.
