Surgery and risk of creuftzfeldt-jakob disease (EUROSURGYCJD)

Objective

Results of case-control studies on the role of surgery in CJD transmission have been considered controversial due to methodology. We propose a study based on approximately 290 definite or probable sporadic CJD cases. Diagnosed since 1987 onwards in Denmark, Finland and Sweden, to be identified from all possible sources and diagnosis-validated from records perusal and surveillance Units data. Population controls, 5:1, will be randomly selected from population registers, after matching by age, sex, and county of residence at date of hospital discharge or death of the case. Data on surgical antecedents and medical conditions prior to CJD clinical onset will be obtained from the three National Hospital in-patient Registers and, in specific instances characterised or verified from direct hospital records perusal and other methods.
