Strategies to prevent congenital toxoplasmosis: a systematic review of the evidence and its implications for practice and policy

Objetivo

The project will review the research evidence relating to prevention options for congenital toxoplasmosis and determine the implications for practice at a time when new research is becoming available. Systematic reviews including individual patient data analyses of cohort studies, will examine the effects of prenatal treatment on outcomes in children and explore whether these effects vary between settings or groups of patients. These reviews and in addition, syntheses of research relating to primary prevention, neonatal screening and the risk of long term impairment due to congenital toxoplasmosis, will be reviewed by an independent working group. A consensus conference of clinicians, patients, parasitologists and policy makers across Europe will determine the implications of the research findings for different health care settings. Finally, a working group will examine the need for co-ordinated research to evaluate future practice.
