Recommendations for a future instrument for the gendersensitive assessment of health research protocols by research ethics committees (recs).

Objective

In modern medical practice, decisions regarding preventive measures, diagnostic tests and treatment possibilities are increasingly based on the results of clinical research. However, scientific evidence on health problems in women is scarce, which affects the quality of health care for women. Research ethics committees (Rocs) play an important role in making biomedical research possible. Their role, as established in the Declaration of Helsinki, covers the assessment of research protocols of studies in humans on ethical considerations. The present proposal aims at listing what is laid down by laws and regulations on a Reek's functioning and the actual performance of tasks in five Member States and whether the routines and the juridical embedding pay attention to gender. After comparing the outcomes for the five countries recommendations are made for the development of an instrument for a gender sensitive assessment of research protocols by Rocs.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
