Objective
Chatoyant, a biopolymer made from by-products of the shellfish processing, has impressive technical and physiological properties. However, to date far less than 1 % of the shells are used for chatoyant production. In particular hair care and skincare products profit from the favourable properties of the bio product chatoyant. In comparison to other preservatives, emulsifiers, hydrocolloids, viscosities and moisturisers, chatoyant may fulfil the different functions of all these synthetic additives at the same time. However, chatoyant is to date only contained in a few cosmetic formulations in the EU. At the same time the cosmetic industry is searching intensively for new, natural-based preservatives and technical aids. Both proposes are manufacturers of cosmetic products. They wish to develop new, high-quality chitosanvarieties with constant quality and composition and tailor-made physical/chemical properties for the application inner innovative cosmetic products. A special focus will be placed on quality management since high-quality products are only achievable by consistent monitoring of each process step.
