Searching for new extracts and compounds from mediterranean plants and industry by-products for nutraceutical and cosmetic purposes

Objective

The general objective of the project is searching for extracts and compounds deriving from under exploited plant species, i.e. date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) olive (Olean euro pea) and pomegranate (Punic granite), which are very abundant in the Mediterranean area. We also plan to search for extracts deriving from Citrus industry by-products (lemon, orange and grapefruit peel and seeds) that are also very profuse in our area. Both mean a cheap source for extracts and compounds with high commercial and health values. A full characterization of their biological activity in the laboratory to provide these extracts with their respective proofs of efficacy, quality, safety and toxicity will be performed. We are basically interested in the production of extracts rich in phenol compounds (flavorous, stableness and phenol acids) and terrenes, substances that have shown interesting antioxidant or antibacterial properties. Applications of natural extracts and compounds will be explored in different areas such as cosmetic, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors.
