Innovation in the process of cork production for elimination of odours responsible for cork taint. from exploratory award exaw-1999-01117

Resultado final

An ozonation reactor, design and kinetic model and pilot plant to be used as the method of choice due to simplicity and easy implementation within the improved boiling module (IBM)for cork manufacturing. Ozonation combined with UVC photo-oxidation is also implemented as a potential water treatment method. A pilot plant ozonation contactor design. A mathematical model of the ozonation of processing water especially cork processing. The total cost for the implementation of ozonation to allow treatment and reuse of water from cork stoppers manufacturing was estimated to be between 0.26 and 0.20 Euro cent per cork stopper manufactured.
Monoclonal antibodies for TCA, developed and characterised. An ELISA method for TCA detection. An ELISA kit with 1-10 ppt detection limit, with 3 months shelf life, and 80 minutes from water sample introduction to result. A displacement immunosensor and model with much higher detection limit but only 15 minutes detection time. No interference of trichlorophenol up to 4 ppm concentration. Such a product could be implemented at a cost of 0.0003 per stopper in the cork industry and prevent 100% of cases of contamination. The principle of immunosensor function has many other applications in food analysis and diagnostics.
