Microarray analysis of gene function and host interaction in salmonella typhimurium

Objective

This project will construct a complete gene array for Salmonella typhimurium and apply this array to identify genes whose expression changes under different environmental conditions, in different mutant strains, or through interaction with host cells. The array will be constructed from the full genomic sequence ofS.typhimurium using specific primers for each gene to ensure a complete and equal representation in the array. Selected chicken genes known or suspected to play a role in bacterial pathogenesis will also be included in the array, to allow the simultaneous analysis of changes in the bacterium and its host. Commercial partners in this project will investigate the novel genes and gene functions identified by this work more fully with a view to their exploitation for vaccine development and identification of resistant animals .
