Objective
Aquaculture has known since 25 years the fastest growth in the world food production. Aquaculture has to face a large variety of pathogens which needs to be understood and treated. A major disease affects trout (Furunculous) and ornamental fish (Goldfish ulcer). This disease can lead to death of the fish. This ulcerative disease is also known to affect many fish species of wild and farmed fish worldwide. The aim of this project is to examine the potential for utilising recombinant proteins as an antigen source for the total immunisation of fish by using an oral vaccine against furunculous or goldfish ulcer disease. Oral vaccination is very attractive since it is suitable for mass administration to fish of all sizes and in any culture system with no stress on the fish. It will overcome the many practical problems which currently restrict the use of vaccines in farmed fish. It will really improve the productivity. It will avoid the release of dangerous chemicals or antibiotics in the water. The suggested final product, in addition to being directed at a specific disease, is also the development of a technique for oral application of an antigen and could be evolved further for all forms of immunisation. Such a product is asset fish farms as wells for the
