Objective
Provirus B19 (B19) is a human pathogen transmitted by respiratory droplets and blood products. Infection can lead to chronic disease and death in certain high-risk groups such as organ transplant recipients, HIV-infected individuals, haemophiliacs and the foetus. Yet there are no standard systems for the diagnosis and treatment of the infection and virus-host interaction is poorly understood. Using a genetic and immunological approach, this project will determine the viral and host factors involved in severe B19 infection and develop new & novel diagnostic systems for the detection, strain differentiation and confirmation of B19 infection. Anti-viral immunotherapy will be standardised and novel immunotherapies will be explored. Infectious dose of B19 will be determined which will lead to improved blood product safety. Improved diagnosis, immunotherapy and safer blood products will lead to enhanced control of provirus B19 infection.
