Objective
Variant: CJD was recognised in 1996. Evidence indicates it is caused by the same agent as causes bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Human exposure likely occurs through consumption of food contaminated by BSE. Before 1996, millions of tonnes of cattle-based foods and cattle feed were legitimately exported, mainly to continental Europe, but to other countries as well. These countries must conduct risk assessments and develop surveillance for BSE and cud to determine if they have acquired any risk. These countries are important indicators of whether there is an international risk of an expanding BSE or VCJD epidemic. Development of diagnostic tests and surveillance Strategies to detect. Small numbers of cases is now essential. Both of these objectives will be addressed through harmonized surveillance and standardized diagnostic protocols.
