The genetic basis of gyrodactylus salaris resistance in atlantic salmon (SALMO SALAR)

Objective

Non-Baltic European Atlantic salmon stocks are faced with extinction from inadvertent introductions of the ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaries. Many stocks in Norway are already extirpated. Current management options, based on rotenone, are only partially effective and environmentally destructive. The project will develop new management options through molecular studies of the genetics of host resistance and parasite pathogen city. The genetic-genetic basis of the host-parasite interaction will be investigated and molecular markers for resistance genes in a salmon and for pathogen city in G. salaries identified. Resistance markers will allow selective enhancement, or breeding in of heritable resistance into, salmon stocks providing a permanent solution to infestation. Pathogen city markers will help document the biogeography of pathogenic forms and allow development of more effective measures for parasite control.
