Mechanisms of cytomegalovirus infection and host defense (CMV AND HOST DEFENSE)

Objective

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is widespread and can cause, in immunocompromised individuals, severe and even fatal disease manifestations, e.g. in neonatal, transplant recipients, during chemotherapy and in AIDS patients. The virus has developed a multitude of mechanisms to circumvent immunosurveillance. In the first line of anti-viral defence are natural killer (NK) cells followed by catatonic T cells. We propose here to investigate CMV infection and to define key host molecules of NK and dendrite cells designed to control viral infections. This will provide novel insight into host-pathogen interactions; define viral immunosuppressive proteins, lyses legends on infected cells and receptors on NK/myeloid cells involved in antiviral defence. New relevant reagents produced will be tested for their potential diagnostic and therapeutic use and immunotherapy methods will be evaluated.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
