Biological micro analysis of bacterial pollution for real time analysis of surfaces

Objectif

The project will endeavour to advance the technology of microbiological assessment by using advanced biotechnology coupled with new manufacturing techniques to greatly increase the speed of testing for bacterial pollution. The device will consist of an adhesive biopolymer-sampling element for swabbing the surface, which will be assessed for bacterial loading very rapidly. A risk assessment will then determine if a bioassay needs to be completed. The bioassay will determine the type of pollution, by species such E.coli0157 or Ps.aeruginosa and the viability and total bacterial loading. The device will consist of a micro-fluidic based biochip with optical and electronic components, which measure m-RNA, phosphataseactivity and total protein. Hence the project will deliver a device that assess, biological assurance by 4 processes; bacterial loading, viability of cells, identificatlon of species and bacterial pollution risk factor.
