Impact of three selected biotechnological strategies for potato pathogen control on the indigenous soil microbiota

Objective

This proposal assesses the ecological impact of three no chemical strategies to control potato pathogens (transgenic lines carrying T4 lysozyme orcecropin/attacin genes, virulent harp mutants of Ralston solanacearurn). Three aspects will be addressed:
(1) the impact on the natural micro biota associated with potato,
(2) the impact on pathogen genetic diversity, and
(3) the efficacy of the strategy. The work will be executed in greenhouses and the field, in a concerted fashion. The fieldwork will be concentrated at 2, i.e. a Northern and a Southern, locations. The Consortium consists of 7 partners with complementary expertise, together with 3 commercial partners and 1 communication specialist. The data will serve to underpin the ecological impact of advanced phytopathogen control strategies and will contribute to the discussion on the use of transgenic plants in Europe.
