Ecological and environmental biosafety assessment of novel plant and microbial biotechnology products

Objective

Innovative biotechnology products based on novel crops and bio inoculants offer an alternative to current agricultural practices that are damaging to the environment, and so have the potential to contribute to sustainability within theatre-food sector. Despite the benefits, public acceptance of Gomes is problematic. Consequently the objectives of this proposal are to
1) assess the ecological impact of GM plants with commercially relevant traits under field conditions, and
2) develop, test and assess the ecological impact of bio inoculants to replace the inputs of agric-chemicals that are deleterious to the environment. An integrated multidisciplinary Cluster Project including industrial partners will achieve these objectives. This Cluster Project will provide new scientific information to address current public concerns on Gomes and help improve the use and perception of plant and microbial biotechnology for the benefit of Europe.
