Environmental impact assessment of transgenic grapevines and plums on the diversity and dynamics of virus populations

Objectif

Our proposal addresses environmental safety issues of transgenic plants expressing virus-derived genes. Our main objective is to evaluate under field conditions the incidence of coat protein genes in transgenic grapevines and plums on the dynamics and variability of virus populations, particularly on the development of viable recombinant viruses with potential harmful properties. We will also assess whether transgenic plants present additional risks compared to non-transgenic plants, examine if heterogonous viruses can revert post-transcriptional gene silencing in plums, and analyse if transgenic transcripts can translocation from transgenic rootstocks to non-transgenic scions in grapevines. Identifying potential risks and assessing their impact is the safest approach to protect the environment prior to the release of virus-resistant transgenic crops.
